Down Syndrome is NOT a disease!!!!!

This is Courtney's report on Down syndrome for her health class...
This whole subject has been a very difficult one as Courtney is learning how to Advocate for her little brother and others with Down syndrome...
Courtney's 7th grade health class has been studying different diseases. Down syndrome was brought up as one of the diseases they would be talking about and was added to a list for the class to do a report in front of the whole class on..Down syndrome was listed among other diseases like MS, Alzheimer's, Cancer, Asthma ect.....When Courtney said to this "teacher" that Down syndrome was not a disease she just ignored my daughter. Courtney decided if she was going to be heard she would just put her name on the list next to Down syndrome...As you can emgine I was PISSED at what this "teacher" was teaching ALL of this young adults in her class..I decided to not jump the gun and just let Courtney present her report and go from there.
Courtney had a girlfriend record her as she gave the report..One thing that you don't see is that when Courtney walked up to the white board she changed the word disease to defect...Listen very close to the end what the "teacher" says to the class after Courtney tells them there is no way to prevent Down syndrome, the teacher says " the best way to avoid having a child with Down syndrome is to have them while you are young!"
NOW I am taking the gloves off and WILL be visiting the school and educating this "teacher" the facts my way!
It just amazes me at how people can still live in the dark ages!

I am very proud of my 13 year old daughter for advocating for those she loves so deeply!

I took the video off of here b/c some people are upset that my daughter was nervous and they feel she did not do a good job...and said so in not so nice of words...I have no idea why people missed the whole point...maybe I should just shut the hell up!

The point is that there are teachers still teaching crap like this to our children...

Rose I'm sorry I didn't get to see it. I get your point though! I'm just shocked. I guess I shouldn't have had Chelsea at the ripe old age of ... uh 26 (conceived at 25!) Maybe she wants her middle school and high school kids to be having babies at their age if we're too old! Keep us posted, I'd kind of like to see you give her a piece of your mind!

Rose, I am sorry that I missed the video. Nervous or not, I think your daughter did a wonderful thing. And if this teacher knew the facts, she would know that most children with Down syndrome are born to younger mothers. I was 28! And I was 36 when I had Preston (who, as you know, doesn't have DS). Sorry that some people didn't get the point of the whole thing, and I apologize for them. Your a great lady and I hope you don't disappear from the boards and blogging. After all, who can we count on for the comic relief without you there, huh???

I am sorry I missed the video. I was 32 when I conceived Aiden. And I have a very good friend who was 19 when her daughter Katelyn was born. Age has nothing to do with winning the lottery. LOL.

Rose, I am also sorry I didn't get to see the video. I'm proud of your kids and especially your daughter for advocating for their brother. I hope my children will be able to do such good jobs when these issues come up in the future for them.
BTW, I was 29 when I conceived Caleb, and I have had 3 more children since him, my youngest I was 36. And I don't think I am done yet. In fact I would love to have another child with DS.:)

Hi Rose. I too am sorry that i didn't get a chance to view your video. I was only 25 when Jackson was born, 24 when he was conceived. I am appauled at the way that this teacher has treated your daughter and on how she is educating the classroom on something she seems to know nothing about! Way to go to Courtney for standing up for her brother and all others with Down syndrome!! She is one brave young gal to stand up to her teacher in front of her whole classroom and she should be proud of a job well done!! :o)
(((hugs)))
Jo and Jackson

Rose -

I have no idea what happened here - but I did see the video, and I thought Courtney did a fine job. I thought the teacher was horrid.

It's sad when people in positions of "power" like teachers talk confidently about things they don't understand. She owes all of us an apology ...

and I was old when I had Shawen (40/41)! But, a good friend of mine at the time was the same age - okay six months younger - and her daughter just had the plain old typical number of chromosomes -

So - waiting until you're 40 to have a baby won't guarantee you a child with T21 !!

I'm sorry I didn't get to see the video. I'm sure your daughter did an awesome job. I think I would be a little nervous putting my teacher into place too! Just for the record, I was 26 and my husband was 24 when we had our first child. She is the most beautiful, wonderful daughter I could ever imagine. Oh, and by the way, she has Down syndrome. Good luck dealing with this teacher!

Rose, a video is not necessary to understand what happened. Chase has an awesome sister to be stand up for him and others. I know you are proud of her and so many people are as well including me. it's a shame there are such rotten people out there.

I'm sorry I missed the video, too! But good for her to stand up for Chase!

The amount of misunderstanding and false assumptions regarding Ds is amazing. And more so because many of those people are "teaching" the next generation. It saddens and frustrates me.

And the offhand comments such as the one that the teacher made need to be corrected. Take Chase in there and do some real teaching!

(oh, yeah- and i guess waiting until I was 27 to have my Chase was completely irresponsible, wasn't it?!?)

Way to go Courtney! My daughter wrote a book about her sister in third grade and I go to talk to the school about Down syndrome to my daughter's classmates. She's in sixth grade now. I will talk to my middle daughter's classes and Peanut's when they get older. That "teacher" is ignorant and I hope you can make her listen. But some people simply want to remain that way. I know of many young couples that have a child with Ds including a mom who was 21. Age does not matter. Never, never, never back down. We have to keep fighting for our children and I believe their siblings are some of the best advocats! I have also seen many self-advocats are wonderful. I'm sorry I didn't get to see the video. Thank you Courtney for your courage. Your brother is lucky to have you!

OMG what the teacher said was horrible, what is wrong with people. I think you should go down to that school and give that horrid teacher a piece of your mind, she owes your whole family an apology. My mother was 25 when she had my dear sister, who by the way has DS.

Hi,
My name is Jamie. I have come across your blog, and I am so proud of your brave little girl!!! I am sorry you had to take the video down, I would have loved to see it. I can't believe that they are still teaching children those things. I have a little girl, Maleia, with Down Syndrome as well, she is 21 months old. I had her at 20 and conceived at 19... guess I wasn't young enough either... But, I am so glad that your little girl was brave enough to stand up in front of her class and that "teacher". Maybe some of those kids learned something that day!!!

Thanks again for the awesome blog!!! If you ever want to e-mail me it's: jlfabel@yahoo.com
